Lines All Around
As you worked through this module, you explored the use of coordinate methods to solve problems in geometry. For this assignment, you will use the formulas that you investigated to describe various images.
Find images of two different objects that you would generally find outdoors and two objects that you would generally find indoors. You may choose to take pictures with a camera, your phone, or locate images online.
Questions to Consider When Selecting Your Images
- What is the object included in your image?
- Is the object typically found outdoors or indoors?
- Does the image of your object include congruent measures?
- Where is the midpoint of the object in your image?
- Does the image of your object include any parallel or perpendicular lines?
Once you have selected your images, overlay a coordinate plane on top of each image. You may use a digital graphics program or simply hand-draw your own coordinate plane.
Visit the Student Resources section for information about applications you can use to help you with this assignment.
Next, use the formulas that you learned during this module to determine measures that help you describe the images. Consider the length and width of the object relative to the coordinate plane, or the length, width, and height if the object appears three-dimensional in the image. Are there any parallel or perpendicular sides to the object or elsewhere in the image? Where would the midpoint(s) of the object be? Please show all your completed math equations that correspond to each image.
For each image, please write a paragraph that explains your findings in your own words. You should discuss how you determined the length, width, height (if applicable), and midpoint of the sides of your object. In addition, describe in your paragraph how you determined whether the sides of your object were parallel or perpendicular.
