Being able to render first aid to someone who has become sick or injured is a very useful skill, and can benefit the person you are trying to help. Before you administer first aid, you must be properly trained. The ability to analyze a situation before administering proper care is called crisis management. In a crisis, it is important to first remain calm, and do what you can to help others remain calm as well. Second, remain focused on the situation so that you can evaluate what is happening, and provide the necessary attention and care. After you have evaluated the situation, call 911 if needed.

Some other life threatening situations can be a result of natural disasters such as tornados, earthquakes, or other severe weather circumstances. In these situations, become familiar with the community resources that can help. For example, such resources include your local broadcast and weather stations, local businesses, emergency care facilities, schools, churches, and local health departments. It is important to know where to go for help, and your local broadcast station can provide you with information during an emergency. Your community resources will also provide you supplies and space needed to care for the individuals who are displaced due to the emergency.
