In this topic, you learned about many notable voyages between 1700-1900 AD. Captain James Cook circumnavigated the world, and C. Wyville Thompson went on a true oceanic voyage. Matthew Fontaine Maury wrote the first book dedicated to oceanography, and Charles Darwin developed what would become the leading theory on species evolution. Not to be outdone, two adventures from Norway even tried to reach the North Pole!
All of these discoveries broadened knowledge of the oceans in general, but researchers had yet to look deeper under the water's surface.
