Causes of Tides

girl on computerA Visit to the Ocean

Pretend that you and your family have lived on the beach for your entire life. Your cousin, who lives in the mountains, has never been to the beach before and knows relatively little about it. She is coming to visit you soon and she is very excited about going to the beach and swimming, but she is still extremely curious about what that experience will be like.

One night, while talking to your cousin over the phone, you explain some basics about the oceans, but you really struggle to give her quality information on tides. You know the tides will not scare her, but you need to help your cousin understand why the water always moves in and out, and you have to explain what tides are. You tell your cousin that you will get back to her once you have found more information by sending her an e-mail.

After you have explored the content in this topic, compose an email to your cousin that addresses the following questions:

  1. What is the definition of a tide?
  2. What is the main contributor to the cause of tides?
  3. What are some other contributors?
  4. What is the difference between a high tide and a low tide?
  5. In your opinion, are tides dangerous?

Your e-mail should include a salutation and a closing and should accurately describe the tides and the answers to the questions provided. All of the information should be well-organized and clearly-written. Before you begin, access the Tide Email Checklist to make sure that you include all of the items required for full credit. You may need to use resources outside of this course to complete this assignment, so please submit a Works Cited document with your assignment submission. If you need assistance, visit the Developmental Module for information on citing any resources that you used.
