Productivity in the Oceans

Smithsonian MuseumPrimary production plays such an important role in life on Earth that it is studied in labs and featured in museums throughout the country. Pretend that you have been asked by a local museum curator to design an exhibit about primary production for a science museum in your area. Money is of no concern, so you have the funds to purchase any important species, artifacts, or other items that you feel should be in the exhibit. Choose two species, artifacts, or other items from this topic that you feel best exemplify primary production and its importance in the food chain.

In a document, list those two items and then write three to four sentences about each of your choices that answer the questions below:

  • Why do you think this species, artifact, or other item best exemplifies the concept of primary production? How would you explain this to the general public?
  • Where is the species, artifact, or other item found?
  • What processes are involved with this species, artifact, or other item – chemosynthesis or photosynthesis?

Before you begin, access the Primary Production Exhibit Checklist to make sure that you include all of the items required for full credit. You may need to use resources outside of this course to complete this assignment. If so, please submit a Works Cited document. If you need assistance, visit the Developmental Module for information on citing any resources that you used.
