Legislative Powers

Checks and BalancesEven with American government separated into three distinct branches, the Founding Fathers were hesitant to grant too much power to any one branch. They carefully considered the powers that the legislative branch needed and wrote them into the Constitution. To keep the power balanced among the branches, a system of checks and balances was also written into the Constitution.
