Module 10: Civil Unrest - The 1960s and the 1970s

Authentic Assessment IconCivil unrest movie trailerIf you have ever been to a movie theater, you know that most movies do not start at the time posted by the cinema. Instead, the start time indicates when the movie theater will begin to show a number of previews for other movies, or movie trailers. Movie trailers are digital advertisements for upcoming movies. Movie production companies release these movie trailers on social media websites, in theaters, and on television.

Video IconFor this assignment, you will need to reflect on all of the aspects of civil unrest that you learned about in this module. For example, in this module, you learned about the Brown v. Board of Education case and the Supreme Court's role in the protection of all citizens’ constitutional rights. Not all movies are the same genre; there are action-adventure movies, comedies, science-fiction movies, mysteries, romances, horror films, dramas, and many more genres! You should pick the genre that most appeals to you and design your trailer for a movie that YOU would like to see.

Your movie trailer should address one or more of the following topics:

  1. Opposition to the Vietnam War
  2. The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP)
  3. Brown v. the Board of Education
  4. The Supreme Court
  5. March on Washington (1963)
  6. Martin Luther King Jr.
  7. Voting Rights Act of 1965
  8. Civil Rights Act of 1964
  9. Americans with Disabilities Act

The movie trailer should be well-organized, creative, and interesting. Instead of just presenting the information or facts in video form, your movie trailer should entice people to see your movie. You should use images, music, animations, real video footage, or other digital assets to compile your movie trailer. Make sure to include a title for your movie.

In addition to your video file, you should submit a storyboard of your movie trailer. You may create your own storyboard design, or you may use the Civil Unrest Movie Trailer Storyboard Template. Use the video creation information found in the Developmental Module to help you create your movie trailer. Before you begin, access the Civil Unrest Movie Trailer Rubric to make sure you include all of the items required for full credit. You will need to use resources outside of this course to complete this assignment. Please submit a Works Cited document. If you need assistance, please visit the Developmental Module for information on citing any resources that you use.

Reflection

Nations must alter their points of view when their citizens push for change. In the 1960s and 1970s, Americans insisted upon a change. Does your movie trailer demonstrate the need for a shift in point of view due to the Vietnam War and Cold War? Do you fully cover the fears felt by Americans from communism? What about how the civil rights movement changed points of view in America? Also, does your movie trailer show how American leadership responded to the need for a shift in point of view?

Take this time to write a brief four to five sentence paragraph and elaborate on civil unrest in America during the 1960s and 1970s. Respond to each of the questions listed above. Record your reflection in a separate document.
