Module 11: The End of the Cold War

Presidential Conversation

George H. W. Bush, Barack Obama, Geroge W. Bush, William Clinton, and Jimmy Carter

Presidents (from left to right): George H. W. Bush, Barack Obama, George W. Bush, William Clinton, and Jimmy Carter

One of the most exclusive “clubs” in the world is the group of living current or former United States presidents. This select group of individuals is rarely together in the same place, and when they are, it makes the news. People often wonder what this select group of people talk about when they are together.

Martina and Terrance would like you to pretend that Ronald Reagan, George H. W. Bush, William “Bill” J. Clinton, George W. Bush, and Barack Obama have all gathered in a room with you to have a conversation. Write a fake dialogue or script in which the six of you discuss the reasons for the collapse of the Soviet Union, the “Reagan Revolution,” the foreign policy of the United States from the 1980s through the early 2000s, and the domestic achievements of those Presidents. Your dialogue should be historically accurate, address the items you have learned about in this module, demonstrate some creative thinking, and include your personal opinions about the four major subjects you are discussing. The expression of your personal opinions should include how the decisions made by these presidents still impact you today. Each participant in the discussion should have a minimum of three posts.

Before you begin, review the Presidential Conversation Checklist to be sure you include all of the items required for full credit. You may need to use resources outside of this course to complete this assignment. If so, please submit a Works Cited document. If you need assistance, visit the Developmental Module for information on citing any resources that you used.

Reflection

In this module, you learned about the decisions of the modern presidents. Imagine you were Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, or Barack Obama during one of their presidencies. What is one decision you would have made differently than that president? Why? In a brief four to five sentence paragraph, fully explain why you would have made a different decision. Be sure you explain why that change of decision would have had better consequences for the American citizens.
