The Jacksonian Era
In all elections prior to the election of Andrew Jackson, a transfer of political power from one presidency to the next had occurred in moderation. Shortly after the election of Andrew Jackson in 1828, 919 officials were removed from their positions. Jackson re-staffed nearly ten percent of all government positions with people who had supported him in the election. Jackson made promises to these supporters in return for political support. The actions by Jackson helped coin the phrase, “to the victors belong the spoils,” or “to the victors go the spoils.”
