Module 7: America at the Turn of the Century - 1900 to the 1930s
SCAMPER
One of the most notable aspects of American society from 1900 to the 1930s is that a lot of changes occurred. Now is your opportunity to prove how much you know about the turn of the century by changing history yourself. Through this authentic assessment, you are going to complete a SCAMPER activity. SCAMPER is an acronym whereby each letter stands for a different change you will implement throughout this time period.
The following key reveals the meaning of each letter in SCAMPER:
S - substitute
C - combine
A - adapt
M - modify
P - put to another use
E - eliminate
R - rearrange
In each section of the SCAMPER, you will fill out information that connects your knowledge to events you already learned about in history. Then, you will have a chance to consider details about this period of history, and how people, places, or events would have turned out differently if certain pieces of it were substituted, combined, adapted, modified, put to another use, eliminated, or rearranged.
First you need to organize your responses to the activity by completing the SCAMPER Answer Guide. Then, choose one of the following ways to convey your ideas:
- Type an essay with a minimum of a four to five sentence paragraph that describes each letter in the SCAMPER activity;
- Illustrate your answers through a series of political cartoons that include three to four sentences of explanation for each;
- Create a podcast that describes the changes in history that you identified in each letter of your SCAMPER activity; or
- Get permission from your instructor about an original idea.
Before you begin, review the SCAMPER Checklist to make sure that you include all of the items required for full credit. You may need to use resources outside of this course to complete this assignment. If so, please submit a Works Cited document. If you need assistance, visit the Developmental Module for information on citing any resources you used.
Once you have completed your SCAMPER activity, please submit your work to the dropbox.
Reflection
Throughout this module, you have seen a lot of change during the turn of the century. In this assignment, you created a lot of changes to history. Take a moment to reflect on the following questions. Then, respond to them in a brief four to five sentence paragraph.
- What do you think was the most significant change that occurred from 1900 to the 1930s? Why?
- Are any of the changes that happened from 1900 to the 1930s still impacting American society today? In what ways?
- Do you think the United States would have been better off if the changes you suggested in the SCAMPER activity really occurred? Why or why not?
Once you have completed this assignment and reflection, please submit your work to the dropbox.
Once you have completed this module, please complete the module test.
