The War in Europe
One of the largest and most decisive battles that the United States has ever taken part in occurred on June 6, 1944. On this date, more than 5,000 ships, 11,000 airplanes, and 150,000 military men stormed the beaches of Normandy, France. Many of the soldiers who stormed the beaches of Normandy were brought to land using a landing craft, with the prime objective of securing a heavily fortified beach. As soon as the boat ramp went down, the soldiers had to swim, run, and crawl to the cliffs. When they arrived, the soldiers were met by heavy gunfire and blanketed with artillery. It is estimated that more than 2,500 American soldiers died during this operation.
