Module 9: The Cold War - The 1950s

 

Cold War Timeline

authentic assessment iconThis quest focused on the early years of the Cold War. Many events during this time period lasted for the forty-five year duration. To help Terrance and Martina make sense of it all, prepare a timeline of the following events:

  • Split of Germany
  • Japan's occupation
  • Marshall Plan
  • Nuclear arms race
  • Truman Doctrine
  • NATO
  • Warsaw Pact
  • Communist takeover of China
  • Nixon exploiting Chinese and Soviet Union disagreements
  • Massive retaliation
  • Korean War
  • The Rosenbergs
  • Senator McCarthy

When you create your timeline, include a picture for each event, the start and stop dates, and a few sentences explaining why the item is important to the Cold War.

Choose one of the following ways to produce your timeline:

  1. Hand draw your timeline, and then take a picture of it for submission into the assignment's dropbox.
  2. Hand draw your timeline, and then scan it for submission into the assignment's dropbox.
  3. Use a paint, graphics, word processing, or computer software program to design your timeline, and then submit it to the assignment's dropbox.

Before you begin, review the Cold War Timeline Checklist to make sure that you include all of the items required for full credit. You may need to use resources outside of this course to complete this assignment. If so, please submit a Works Cited document. If you need assistance, visit the Developmental Module for information on citing any resources you used.

Reflection

Take a moment to reflect on the following questions and respond to each in a brief four to five sentence paragraph.

  • Which event in the timeline do you feel had the greatest effect on the direction of the Cold War? Why?
  • Which event in the timeline has the most impact on your life today? Why?
