Demographic Research and Analysis

Earlier in this module, you used the CIA's World Factbook to research the population characteristics of four different countries. For this assignment, you will continue your investigation by researching and analyzing the demographic data of four different nations from around the world. First, select one country from each of the following regions:

Research

Once you have selected four countries, visit the CIA’s World Factbook to begin your research. Visit the Student Resources section for assistance navigating the CIA’s World Factbook. Please use the Demographic Research and Analysis Template to document the following statistics for each country:

  1. Language: Identify the official language(s), and include the percentage of people who speak each of the different languages in the country.
  2. Religion: List the country's three largest religious groups with the associated percentages.
  3. Ethnicity: List the country's three largest ethnic groups with the associated percentages.
  4. Political Boundaries: List any countries that share a boundary.
  5. Political Cooperation: List three international organizations in which the country participates, if applicable.
  6. Political Conflict: If the country is currently engaged in a territory/boundary dispute, list the foreign nation(s) involved.
  7. Population: Identify the country’s total population.
  8. Birth and Death Rates: Indicate the birth and death rates for the country.
  9. Age Distribution: List the age distribution for the country.
  10. Migration: Indicate the country’s net migration.
  11. Personal Choice: Choose another statistic to include about the country.

Analysis

Once you gather the information, use the demographic data to respond to all of the following prompts. Answer each question in three-to-five sentences.

  1. Which one of your researched countries would you consider the most culturally diverse? What reasons would you give to support this?
  2. If one of your selected countries is currently involved in a territory/boundary dispute, briefly describe the conflict. If not, describe one international organization of which one of your countries is a member.
  3. Which of the four countries has the largest population? Do you think this number will change significantly in the next twenty-five years? Why?

Before you begin, access the Demographic Research and Analysis Checklist to be sure you include all of the items required for full credit. You will need to use resources outside of this course to complete this assignment, so be sure to submit a Works Cited document. If you need assistance, visit the Student Resources section for information on citing any resources that you use.
