Conflict in Southwest Asia Debate

Unresolved conflicts plague different areas of Southwest Asia. Take a moment to read the following questions. Then, select one question you feel is the most important, interesting, or significant.

Both of these issues are important international debates. For this assignment, you will take a position on one of the issues. First, you will research your position. Then, you will debate your position with a coursemate.

Before the Debate

Once you have selected an issue and taken a position, prepare for the debate by answering the following questions:

  1. What side do you take on this issue?
  2. What evidence do you have that your stance is correct?
  3. What is the opposing side of your issue?
  4. What evidence might the opposition present to prove they are correct?
  5. How would you resolve this conflict? Why do you think this will work?

Outline your answers to the above questions, making sure to reference the material you explored in this topic. You will need to turn a copy of your outline into the dropbox. Be sure the evidence you collect for your stance includes at least three facts. Also, be sure the evidence you anticipate your opposition will present includes at least two facts.

The Debate

Once you have outlined your answers, select a coursemate who is on the opposing side of your issue. Each of you should take three-to-five minutes to discuss your side of the issue. Then, present your ideas about how the conflict should be resolved. Consider whether you can come to a compromise.

After the Debate

After you have finished debating with your coursemate, answer the following questions individually.

  1. After listening to your coursemate’s viewpoint, did your stance on the issue change? Why or why not?
  2. Do you believe you or your coursemate presented better evidence for your stance? Provide at least two examples.
  3. Were you and your coursemate able to come up with a resolution to the conflict together or did you each maintain different ideas?
  4. How does this experience compare to the way you have resolved conflicts in your own life?
  5. Why do you think world leaders have had difficulty resolving this issue?
