Module Assessment
Empires of Africa and the Americas

Archaeologist's Ancient Map and Journal

an archaeologist digging in the dirt surrounded by tools for the job

In this module, you discovered the histories of civilizations in Africa and the Americas. You also learned how the Europeans encountered these cultures by traveling the sea in search of gold, spices, slaves, salt, and other goods. For this assignment, imagine an archaeologist at a site in Europe came across two very important artifacts that you, a European explorer who went on three separate voyages to Africa and the Americas, left behind in a time capsule. Specifically, the archaeologist found an ancient map of your journeys as an explorer, and a journal of what you encountered in each culture.

Please create these two primary sources, including the following items in your original map and journal:

Ancient Map

Journal

Options to create your ancient map and journal include the following:

  1. Hand draw the ancient map and journal, and then take a picture of them for submission into the assignment's dropbox.
  2. Hand draw the ancient map and journal, and then scan them for submission into the assignment's dropbox.
  3. Use a paint, graphics, word processing, or other type of software to design the features on your ancient map and journal, and then submit them into the assignment's dropbox.

You may use a combination of hand drawn and digital artifacts for your time capsule if you prefer.

If you choose to develop an ancient map by hand instead of digitally, use the Ancient Map Instructions to help you create an authentic-looking artifact. Before you begin, access the Time Capsule Checklist to make sure you include all items required for full credit. You may need to use resources outside of the course to complete this assignment. If so, please submit a Works Cited document. If you need assistance, visit the Student Resources section for information on citing any resources that you use.
