Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin at Camp David 1978

Since President Jimmy Carter brought the leaders of Egypt and Israel together to sign the Camp David Accords in 1978, the United States has played an active role in trying to negotiate a settlement to the Arab-Israeli conflict. One of the current components of the American plan for peace has been a two state solution, with one Jewish state and one Palestinian state. These states would not be entirely independent. They would have restrictions to ensure that the two sides did not attack each other, and there might be some sort of joint authority over Jerusalem.
