Competition for the New World

Instructional iconexplorer in a baseball capThrough the years, many professional baseball players appeared on small, cardboard trading cards called baseball cards. These baseball cards usually feature a picture of the player, along with important statistics from the player’s professional career. In this assignment, you will create a baseball card for one of the explorers that you studied in this topic. This baseball card should detail the life of the explorer and each side of the card will convey different information.

On the front side of the card, you should include the following information:

  • The explorer's name
  • A hand-drawn or clip-art image of the explorer
  • A description of the occupation in which this person was engaged before he became an explorer
  • A list of character traits- based on what you have learned in this topic and any research that you have gathered, how would you describe this person’s personality?
  • Three of the explorer’s achievements

The reverse side of your card should include two to three sentences analyzing the explorer’s contribution to the world.

You may need to conduct research for statistics or other information about your explorer, and you will need to properly cite any external resources that you incorporate.  Please see the Developmental Module for more information about properly citing resources.  Before you begin, review the Explorer Baseball Card Checklist so that you understand how your assignment will be graded.

Options to create your baseball card include the following:

  1. Hand-draw the assignment and then take a picture of it for submission to the assignment’s dropbox.
  2. Hand-draw the assignment and then scan it for submission to the assignment’s dropbox.
  3. Utilize a paint or graphics program to create the advertisement.

Once you have completed your explorer baseball card, please submit your work to the dropbox.
