Life in the New Colonies

Image of horse with potatoInstructional iconWhat do horses and potatoes have in common? They were both part of the Columbian Exchange, which involved the transfer of food, plants, animals, and diseases between Europe and the New World. The exchange of goods, ideas, and technology had a profound effect on both the indigenous peoples of the New World, and the European colonizers. In order to graphically depict this important exchange, use the Columbian Exchange Map Template to create a map that shows:

  • The three main continents involved in triangular trade are labeled and colored in different colors
  • At least three mother countries appropriately labeled
  • At least four important trading posts or colonies appropriately labeled
  • Arrows showing the triangular trade pattern that embraced the Atlantic Ocean
  • A short list next to each of those arrows showing the items that were traded between locations
