The Development of English Democracy

Unlike the absolutist monarchies that existed in much of the rest of Europe, England experienced only a short period of absolutist rule, with disastrous results for the power of the monarch. In this interactivity, take a look at some of the early events in the development of English democracy, beginning in 1100 with the writing of the Magna Carta. Then, follow the historical events from the Tudor dynasty through a civil war, which ended with the beheading of the king and the elimination of the monarchy. After a short period with no king, the monarchy was restored with limited powers under a democratic government that is still in place today. Click the player to begin.
