Solar Activity

SunThe Sun provides the Earth with the heat and light needed for life, but the Sun is a very active solar body. The gases within the Sun are undergoing a nuclear process, and this makes the Sun eruptive by nature.  In this topic, you will investigate the solar activities of the Sun. All of these activities have one thing in common - magnetic fields. You will explore sunspots, coronal mass ejections,  and the aurora to gain an understanding of the dynamic Sun.

Essential Questions

  • What are sunspots?
  • How do magnetic fields affect sunspots, sunspot cycle, prominences, flares, coronal activity and solar wind?
  • How can solar activity, including the solar constant and northern lights, affect human kind on Earth?
