If you have ever read a food label (like the one for macaroni and cheese shown to the right), you have seen the term "calorie." Food calorimetry allows us to determine the number of calories per gram of food. To determine the calories in food, a piece of food is burned and the released energy is used to heat a known quantity of water. The temperature change (∆T) of the water is then used to determine the amount of energy in the food. Before you learn more about calorimeter, watch how food calories are determined by viewing the video clip Calorimetry by eMediaVA℠ .
