Changes in the Atmosphere

Image showing dry climate and normal climate with a student walking between both imagesEarth’s atmosphere naturally changes over time. Scientists have evidence that humans are changing Earth’s atmosphere through the burning of fossil fuels. These atmospheric changes can have harmful effects on the environment and people. Smog and acid precipitation are known to cause health problems, pollute waterways, and damage property. Depletion of the ozone layer by chemicals used in aerosols and refrigerants allows more of the Sun’s harmful ultraviolet radiation to reach the surface of Earth.

The increasing concentration of greenhouse gases is causing Earth’s average temperature to rise. Global warming is linked to mass extinctions, rising sea level, and an increasing number of severe storms, among other serious environmental problems. To avoid the most severe of these consequences, actions must be taken to reduce global fossil fuel emissions.
