Changes in the Atmosphere

Link IconTimeSince most climatic changes occur over long periods of time, it is difficult for humans to experience the changes as they are happening. By looking at climate data over a long period of time, scientists can observe trends in climate patterns. Visit NASA’s Climate Time Machine to make your own observations about the levels of sea ice, sea level, carbon emissions, and global temperature. While you are using the Climate Time Machine, think about the following questions:

  • What is the overall trend for the level of sea ice in the Arctic Ocean?
  • What would happen to coastal areas if sea levels where to rise to 20 feet?
  • What has happened to carbon emissions since 2003?
  • What has happened to global temperatures since 1890?
