Did you think the tragedy was going to end with “happily ever after?” Through two shepherds, Oedipus finally discovers the truth. The first shepherd, a Corinthian, sheds light on the birth of Oedipus. The second shepherd, a Theban, informs Oedipus it was he who killed his father, thus fulfilling the prophecy.
As Oedipus traveles on his journey to self-discovery, he discoveres the truth during his greatest moment of weakness. He then finds his wife, Iocaste, dead and he blinds himself with her golden brooches. Really, Oedipus’ tragic flaw has blinded him through his journey all long. In the end, Oedipus is blinded and exiled from Thebes.
