Writing Focus - Comparison and Contrast Essay

When comparing and contrasting, you must ensure that there is structure and your ideas are balanced.  In this assignment, you are to choose two pieces of literature from the list below and write a comparison and contrast essay. Remember to select literature where differences and similarities are identifiable.

Literature Options:

  • “Occupation: Conductorette” from I know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou
  • “Sadie and Maud” by Gwendolyn Brooks
  • “Barbie Doll” by Marge Piercy
  • “By Any Other Name” from Gifts of Passage by Santhna Rama Rau
  • “The Leader in the Mirror” by Pat Mora
  • “Desert Exile: The Uprooting of a Japanese American Family” by Yoshiko Uchida
  • “Courage” by Ann Sexton

Before you begin writing, you must create an outline. After you have drafted your ideas in an outline, write your essay. Before you begin your outline and essay, access the Comparison and Contrast Rubric to make sure that you include all of the items required for full credit.
