For everything that happens in life, there is usually a cause that precedes it. This is called cause and effect. For example, a weather system coming together could cause an outbreak of tornadoes. Exposure to a virus will cause you to get sick. These are events over which most people typically have little control; however, other events may be somewhat controlled by people. For example, if you study hard, you might get an A on a test. Your studying caused the effect of the high score.
