Intertextual Connections

When you examine common themes in many different genres, it is easier to understand how the theme is developed and why it is a theme for a given piece. Sometimes seeing a theme fully illustrated in a piece that is different from the novel or short story you are reading can help you examine the text in a slightly different way.  Additionally, listening closely to songs can help you identify common themes in music, which can also contribute to your understanding of characters and events in literary pieces.
