Part One: Reading Strategies
Read Martin Luther King, Jr.'s famous "I Have a Dream" speech from the National Archives website.
As you read, use reading strategies to actively read the speech and to gain a better understanding of it. You should use each of the strategies at least once. Before you begin, think about what you already know about Martin Luther King, Jr. Predict what his message will be. As you read, determine who he is addressing. How is he convincing his audience?
Then, in one to two well-written paragraphs, explain what Martin Luther King, Jr. was trying to tell his audience in his speech. Also, specifically describe how you used each reading strategy and how it helped you to interpret King's message.
Before you begin, make sure you review the Reading Strategies Checklist to understand what to include in your assignment and to know how it will be graded. You will need to use resources outside of this course to complete this assignment. Please submit a Works Cited document. If you need assistance, visit the Developmental Module for information on citing any resources, such as images, that you use.
Once you have completed your reading strategies explanation, please submit your work to the dropbox.
Part Two: Reading and Following Directions
There are times when it is important to read carefully so that you can follow directions to complete a task. An example of this would be reading and completing a job or college application. For this activity, select an application that you are insterested in completing. It may be for college, a scholarship, or for a job. Read the application carefully and follow the directions to complete the form. If you have difficulty finding an application you can use the link to the Common Application, an online application that many colleges and universities use for college admission processes.
Was this task difficult? Were the directions on the application clear? Do you think that failing to read and follow directions carefully could impact the results of your application? Respond to these questions in a journal entry. If you need assistance on writing a journal entry, please visit the Developmental Module for more information. Once you have completed your journal entry, please save it with a file name of mod1top2_application and submit it to the journal dropbox.
