Have you ever finished a long reading assignment, only to realize that you have only a vague idea about what you have just read? That happens occasionally to everyone. The words go by, but they do not mean anything. You might be thinking about when the bell is going to ring for lunch, whether rain will cancel this weekend’s concert, or why the air conditioning is so loud. All these thoughts may distract you from understanding what you read. To be successful in this online class, or in any class for that matter, you will need to be an active reader. You cannot just scan the words you read. Active reading requires the reader to interact with the text to generate summaries, make connections, identify questions, generate commentary, and use word-analysis strategies to expand vocabulary.
