Using Allusions

Hercules

Hercules, or Herakles, is a common allusion from Greek
and Roman mythology used in literature.

An allusion is a reference to a well-known work, person, or event. Many of the allusions you encounter in literature reference either Christian or Greek mythology or William Shakespeare, whose work provides the source for many modern allusions. The use of allusions has been a popular literary device since the Renaissance. Early American writings are filled with them. You will study examples of allusions in this topic, read a captivity narrative by Mary Rowlandson and build your grammar skills.
