flood damage from Hurrican Katrina

Flooding from Hurricane Katrina in 2005

Nature is a powerful force that is vital to human existence. People are dependent upon nature for basic human needs such as food, shelter, and water. However, modern society seems to shelter itself from nature. People have houses that are climate-controlled and manicured lawns that are sparse of its natural ecosystems. It is common nowadays to spend a lot of time enjoying television, video games, cell phones, and the Internet, making it easy to disregard the nature that exists all around. However, there is much to be learned from nature, even in a technology-based society like that of the United States.
