Contemporary Connections – Social Injustice

students holding books walking togetherLiterature is not created in a box or vacuum. Literature is reflective of the world around its creation. You might ask, "What if an author just meant his or her piece to be entertaining?" While entertainment is a primary purpose for writing, all of the authors you have seen in this course were definitely not just trying to tell a good story. They represented their fears, hopes, and dreams in the reflections of the society and time in which they lived. Realism to this day is still used in literature with abundance because of its effective way of revealing the social injustices that continue to exist in today's society. By understanding artistic literature and how it is crafted, you can not only better understand your world and your place in it but perhaps someday use it in your own narrative to make the world a little more just.
