Character Example - Cinderella

Consider the characters from the story of Cinderella. The protagonist of the story is definitely Cinderella because she is the main character around who the story is centered. The antagonists are her evil family, including her stepmother and stepsisters. They are the opposing characters who are working against Cinderella. Along with Cinderella, they are all the primary characters in the story. The secondary characters would definitely be the prince, the fairy godmother, and Cinderella's animal friends; they were necessary to move along the plot, but they are not really main characters. There are other characters mentioned in the story, like the king; however, these characters would not really be considered primary or secondary characters because their absence in the story wouldn't hurt the plot.

Cinderella is a dynamic character because she undergoes a major change from a maid to a princess throughout the plot of the story. The wicked stepmother and stepsisters are static characters because they remain evil from beginning to end. Cinderella is a round character because she is good, patient, and obedient, but she also disobeys her stepmother and attends the ball against her wishes.  The wicked stepmother and stepsisters are flat characters because they are one thing - wicked!
