Allegory occurs when a literary work contains a hidden meaning as well as a surface story. As the reader interprets the work, he or she discovers that events and characters represent or symbolize actual events and people in current events or history. The novel Animal Farm is an excellent example of allegory, because of the parallels between characters in the book and the Russian Revolution. In Chapter 1 and Chapter 2, the animals gain control of the farm and set forth rules to live by, hopefully paving the way to their ideal utopia.
