In this topic, you learned about some of Mark Twain's adventures traveling west more than a hundred years ago. Now it is your turn to describe your own adventure.
For this topic application, you will have the opportunity to compose your own descriptive nonfiction piece about an adventure that you have personally experienced. As you choose an adventurous experience from your past to write about, keep in mind that your adventure does not have to be as perilous or exotic as Twain's journey to the "Wild West." For example, maybe you want to describe the experience of going ice skating for the first time. Or maybe your first experience of watching a film in a movie theater as a six-year-old child was a thrilling adventure. As long as your experience is nonfiction and in the spirit of adventure, feel free to capture those moments using vivid description.
As you compose your nonfiction piece, remember the techniques that you learned in this topic regarding description. You must demonstrate your understanding of these techniques by incorporating at least one instance of each them: sensory details, figurative language, and mood. Also, pay close attention to your word choice and be sure to show rather than tell. Your ultimate goal is for your readers to experience your adventure as if they had been right there beside you.
Before you begin, review the Descriptive Nonfiction Checklist to make sure that you include all of the items required for full credit.
