Flashing Your Hazard Lights: Suicide Prevention

Helping HandPodcastIn this topic, you learned that helping someone who has suicidal thoughts is critical to his or her survival. One way to show support is by initiating meaningful conversation. In this application, collaborate with a coursemate to develop a supportive conversation between two friends. Each of you will play a role in the conversation. Specifically, one person will have suicidal thoughts, and the other person will try to prevent the suicide from occurring.

First, prepare a script of your conversation, and then create an audio recording that reflects what you decided to discuss. Be creative and compassionate, but also make sure to address the following:

  • At least two verbal signs that indicated the person was suicidal;
  • At least two nonverbal signs that indicated the person was suicidal;
  • A reason why one friend decided to confront the suicidal friend; and
  • A possible solution that could help prevent the suicide from occurring.

Your conversation should last between two and three minutes. Once you have completed the written script for your conversation, record it using recording software. When you are recording the audio file, be sure to speak slowly and clearly. Use the audio recording information found in the Developmental Module to help you create the conversation.

Before you begin, access the Suicide Prevention Conversation Checklist to make sure that you include all of the items required for full credit. You may need to use resources outside of this course to complete this assignment. If so, please submit a Works Cited document.
