Classical Conditioning
On a daily basis, you are surrounded by examples of classical conditioning. For example, do you associate a certain song with a person or event in your life? Have you ever purchased an item because you associate a celebrity with the item? Do you react with fear toward someone based on a previous experience?
In this application activity, think of three examples of how you have been classically conditioned. Then, for each example, identify the unconditioned stimulus (UCS), unconditioned response (UCR), conditioned stimulus (CS), and conditioned response (CR). Type your responses in a word processing program.
The following offers an example for the activity:
I fear bees because it was really painful when I was stung by one a year ago. Now, whenever I see a bee near me, I scream.
- UCS: bee sting
- UCR: pain
- CS: bee coming near
- CR: scream
