Defining Abnormal

"Am I normal?"

Most people have asked themselves this question at some point. Abnormal behaviors tend to accompany a set or cluster of symptoms. By placing these symptoms on a spectrum from mild to severe, the degree to which someone exhibits them becomes more clear.

Take a moment to think about the the following symptoms, and whether you have ever experienced them:

  • Fatigue
  • Lack of interest in previously enjoyed activities
  • Negative thinking
  • Inability to concentrate
  • Irritability

By using the spectrum below, where do these symptoms currently fall between mild and severe in your life?

The above symptoms describe depression, and most people have experienced these problems. The severity and duration of time in which these symptoms are expressed help determine the degree to which the depression becomes a problem that affects someone's ability to function. As you continue learning about psychological disorders, keep in mind that almost all people have experienced at least some amount of abnormal behavior and abnormal mental processes.
