Jamestown and the Southern Colonies

Acquiring Territory

Sailing VesselDiscussion IconAs you may already know, the English, French, and Spanish all sent colonists to explore and claim the New World. Why do you think England, France, and Spain risked their best ships and sailors to acquire new territory in other parts of the world? Do you believe the risk was worth the reward? Why or why not? If you were a colonist on one of these ships, how would you feel about sharing this newly acquired land with American Indians?

Based on what you already know about the early colonists, compose a response that answers each of the questions above. Post your response to the discussions area. Then, return to the topic several times over the next few days to read your coursemates’ posts.
