New England was established for religious freedom. All Martina and Terrance had to do was look around to see the impact that religion had on daily life in the New England colonies. Education, government, and social life in Massachusetts were all influenced by God’s word. Even the way that the Puritans interacted with the new people that they encountered was influenced by their religious beliefs, a main reason why this colony experienced difficulty and had dissenters who left to create their own colonies in Rhode Island and Connecticut. Martina and Terrance are now on their way to explore the Middle colonies and they can only wonder—will the people be the same? Are the economy and the reasons for settlement any different?
