The Middle Colonies

Martina overlooks a ship which brought settlers to New Jersey

Thanks to the superb guidance of Martina and Terrance, you now know that Dutch, German, and English colonists came to the Middle colonies in search of economic opportunity and religious freedom. The entrepreneurial spirit of these immigrants allowed them to take advantage of the abundant natural resources to become successful artisans, shipbuilders, farmers, and traders. Their mix of religious beliefs and the democratic ideas of basic rights created a more flexible social structure than found in the New England and Southern colonies. The colonists took advantage of their fresh start in the New World to build two of the most important cities in the colonies.
