Containment
Martina at the Korean War Memorial in New York City
Your travels with Terrance and Martina through the early years of the Cold War are now over. When China became a communist country, American fears that communism would spread throughout the world heightened. Even though China and the Soviet Union ended up being adversaries instead of allies, the United States developed the Truman Doctrine to contain the spread of communism. The United States put that policy into practice when it created the defensive alliance called the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, or NATO. This organization acted as a block against Soviet aggression into Europe. In addition, the United States practiced the policy of containment when it sent military troops to help South Koreans fight back against communist North Korean invaders. After the U.S. pushed back the North Koreans, communist China entered the war, which eventually ended in a stalemate, with South Korea remaining free of communism.
