Imagine that it's 1946 and you're either a Muslim living in what will soon be India, or a Hindu living in what soon will become Pakistan. Think about whether or not you would want to stay where you are, or pack up all your belongings and leave for the country where your religion will be in the majority. What would you do?
Once you have made your decision, write a one to two paragraph diary entry justifying your decision. In your entry, include at least three historical events that have happened in the Indian colony which affected your decision-making process. Be persuasive and specific, since you may have to use similar arguments to sway your family and friends to make the same choice. Since this is a diary entry, you should write your paragraphs in the first person; for example, you might start your diary entry with the phrase “In planning for independence from Britain, I have decided to…”
Before you begin, download the Indian Independence Diary Checklist so that you know what items you need to include in your entry for full credit. If resources outside of this course are used to complete your diary entry, please submit a Works Cited document with your assignment. If you need assistance, visit the Developmental Module for information on citing any resources that you used.
Once you have completed your diary entry, submit your work to the dropbox.
