Martin Luther appearing before the Diet of Worms

application iconPretend that it is 1521, that you are Martin Luther, and that the Edict of Worms has just condemned you for publishing your 95 Theses. Emperor Charles V and Pope Leo X's reactions to your writings have forced you into hiding. While you are in hiding, you are staying in touch with family and friends through letters.

For this application, write a letter to a friend or family member outlining the events of your life, starting with writing the 95 Theses in 1517. Your letter should be eight to ten sentences in length and should include the following information:

  • A description of the 95 Theses and their importance in the Protestant Reformation
  • An outline of your key religious beliefs
  • A description of any actions taken against you by Emperor Charles V and Pope Leo X
