Absolute Monarchies

The Age of Absolutism takes its name from a series of European monarchs who increased their power in the central governments. Characteristics of absolute monarchs included the belief in divine right and the centralization of power. Louis XIV ruled France, and the palace of Versailles became a symbol of royal power. Peter the Great of Russia helped to westernize his country by making social changes and expanding the borders of his country. Frederick the Great of Prussia created the strongest military force in Europe.
