Galileo facing the Roman Inquisition by Cristiano Banti (1857)

Instructional iconIn 1633, the scientist Galileo was put on trial for heresy based on his support for the theory that the Earth revolved around the Sun. While the heliocentric theory was later proven to be true, Galileo’s trial serves as an example of conflicting feelings about scientific theory and practice. Today, many people have conflicting opinions about a number of modern scientific theories or practices. There is disagreement about whether or not there are moral reasons to restrict scientific advancements.

Consider these controversial issues and decide whether or not you think there should be restrictions on their practice:

  • Evolution vs. Creation Science
  • Stem Cell Research
  • Cloning
  • Human Genetic Engineering

Do you think that any moral, social, or political authority should censor science? If so, to what extent? If not, how do you think society should deal with any negative consequences of scientific actions?
