Toussaint L'Ouverture

Instructional iconIn many of the Latin American independence movements there was a leader who helped to inspire local forces and organized the movement. Pretend that you are Toussaint L’Ouverture writing a letter in the first person to Simon Bolivar. In your ten to twelve sentence letter, describe what happened during your fight for independence and compare it to what Bolivar had to do to liberate other parts of Latin America. Make sure that you include the following items in your letter:

  • Descriptions of at least three acts or events that happened during Haiti’s revolt
  • One to two sentences comparing the events in Haiti to Bolivar’s actions when he liberated Colombia and Venezuela
  • Descriptions of at least three acts or events related to Bolivar

Since both of these men were necessary to the independence movements in their regions, the tone of the letter should be one of camaraderie. Before you begin, access the Letter to Bolivar Checklist to make sure that you include all of the items required for full credit. You may need to use resources outside of this course to complete this assignment. If so, please submit a Works Cited document. If you need assistance, visit the Developmental Module for information on citing any resources that you used.

Once you have completed your letter, please submit your work to the dropbox.
