The Quantum Mechanical Model

Werner Heisenberg, Louis de Broglie, and Erwin Schrödinger

After Maxwell Planck and Niels Bohr, other scientists, such as Louis de Broglie, Erwin Schrödinger, and Werner Heisenberg added contributions to the modern atomic theory. Together, their findings combined to form a very complex mathematical model that describes the nature of electrons and the energy that they contain. What started as a simple model of the atoms with protons and neutrons in the nucleus and electrons outside of the nucleus evolved into a much more complicated model. In this topic, you will investigate the quantum mechanical model. This model explained a new way of organizing and expressing the location of electrons of in atom.

Essential Question

  • How are the electrons organized in the quantum mechanical model?
