Information graphics, also called infographics, convey pieces of information using visual representations. Click on the thumbnail on the right and take a few moments to view a sample infographic about sodium from the United States Centers for Disease Control. The information displayed on this infographic does not pertain to your study of Earth science; however, the methods that it uses to communicate ideas is helpful.

For this assignment, you are going to create an infographic that conveys the information that you learned about fossil fuels. You should use images, text, graphs, and symbols to create one large infographic that communicates the important concepts about coal, natural gas, and oil. Make sure to communicate your ideas clearly. Your infographic should be well-organized, but it should also be graphically interesting and attractive.

In your infographic, you should include the following information:

  • How each of the fossil fuels were created;
  • Where fossil fuel reserves are located and how many there are;
  • How each of the fossil fuels are extracted and distributed; and
  • The advantages and disadvantages of the use of each fossil fuel, including any environmental impacts.

Before you begin, access the Fossil Fuels Infographic Checklist to make sure that you include all of the items required for full credit. You may need to use resources outside of this course to complete this assignment. Options to create your infographic include the following:

  1. Hand-draw the assignment and then take a picture of it for submission to the assignment's dropbox.
  2. Hand-draw the assignment and then scan it for submission to the assignment's dropbox.
  3. Create a new file in a paint or graphics program and utilize the software to create the image. You can then submit your work to the assignment’s dropbox.
  4. Use a mobile or computer-based application to create an image or document. Then, email or export the final product for submission to the assignment’s dropbox.
