Plate Tectonics

Plate tectonics is the process of the Earth’s lithosphere moving atop the asthenosphere. The Theory of Plate Tectonics is supported by a great deal of scientific evidence, and it is generally accepted as true. The lithosphere is divided into several major and minor plates that move and shift due to convection in Earth’s mantle. The continents have moved together and apart several times over the course of Earth’s history. There are three major types of plate boundaries, and each type is associated with unique landforms and features on Earth’s surface. Plate tectonics is an ongoing natural process that creates earthquakes and volcanic eruptions around the world every day.
